Science Concept: Lightning = Life?

Some scientists believe that the earliest life forms arose from nonliving materials that were struck by lightning. In 1953, University of Chicago student Stanley Miller and his thesis advisor, Harold Urey, designed an experiment in which they ran electric current through a flask of “primordial soup”: water and a mixture of gases thought to make up Earth’s early atmosphere, including methane, ammonia, and hydrogen. What resulted was a dark fluid that contained amino acids—the building blocks of life.
