How Gas Gets to You

• Natural gas deposits are found deep
  in the earth.
  When a gas deposit is located, a well is drilled to bring the gas up. The gas is then pumped to a processing plant. Natural gas travels from the processing plant through large underground pipelines.
  
  
• A distinctive smell is added to the gas so
  you know if it is leaking.
  A chemical odorant that can smell like rotten eggs (mercaptan) is added to gas so people will know when there is a gas leak.
  
  
• Gas comes to you in underground pipes.
  One million miles of underground pipelines deliver natural gas to you and 160 million other customers in the United States. The delivery lines can cost as much as one million dollars per mile to build.

Natural gas is extracted from deep wells and delivered to homes and businesses through underground pipes.
