First Aid
The first few minutes after an accident are the most critical. If you can react quickly and effectively, it can mean the difference between life and death for the victim.
Check
- Check the scene to make sure its safe to help.
NEVER attempt to help someone who is still in contact with a source
of electricity. You could be shocked too. Instead, disconnect power
at the service panels main switch.
- Check the victim for consciousness.
Call
- Call 911 or the local emergency number.
- Ask someone else to call if youre helping the victim.
- Give your location, the type of accident, and the victims
condition.
- Dont hang up until the dispatcher says you can.
Care
- Check the victim for breathing, pulse, and bleeding.
- Help victims with life-threatening emergencies first.
- Dont move anyone who is injured unless they are in danger.
- Help them rest comfortably, keeping them warm or cool as needed.
- Offer reassurance.
- Seek medical help: Injuries may not be immediately
apparent.
In an electric- or natural-gas-related emergency, stay
calm and think before you act. Dont become a victim while helping!
